Enjoying a Warm and Bountiful Fall!
What a stretch of fall weather we've had so far! Today was the first rainy monday morning harvest in a few months, but we won't let that detract from an otherwise gorgeous start to the season. Plus the fields were ready for another rain.
The warm weather has been great for crops still growing in the field. We're still pulling hundreds of pounds of produce out of the fields each week and have even more stuff reaching maturity over the next few weeks. It's looking like we might see a frost in the next week or two, but that's even better for the veggies! It will spell the end for summer season crops, but it makes those fall veggies so much sweeter. There are a few things that we wait to get a frost on before we start pulling them out of the fields. Parsnips and brussel sprouts in particular benefit from a fall frost, but everything gets sweeter with the cool weather. When the temps start to dip, cold tolerant plants begin to metabolize and store sugars in their cells to act as a kind of natural antifreeze. This helps them better withstand freezing temperatures, and it also makes them nice and sweet for eating!
Fall Shares Week 2
We've got another great lineup of fresh produce for our members this week!
Bok choy is looking beautiful in the field and might be the best crop of it we've grown in years.
Potatoes, leeks, and celeriac are going to delivery shares as a group because celeriac in a potato leek soup is the absolute BEST.
Carrots will be a staple through the fall and the beds are looking great.
We got our delivery of sweet potatoes from Picadilly Farm today and they will be in shares throughout the season.
