The Veggies Keep Growing through this Warm Fall!
Last night was the end of a short cold snap between two gorgeous fall weeks. I covered everything that we want to keep harvesting through the fall with row cover at the end of last week, but it will be warm enough over the next few nights to take the covers off again. I usually only start covering once it dips below 28. Everything out there can handle a frost and benefit from a frost, but below 28 can start to leave some damage. We use a lightweight row cover that offers a couple degrees of protection from the cold. For more sensitive crops like cauliflower and beets, I'll add a second cover on the coldest nights. The forecast claimed we would need that second cover over the weekend, but the cold weather never really materialized. Last night was supposed to be the coldest, but the farm weather station shows it barely got below freezing. Better safe than sorry.
It was nice to avoid those coldest nights, and having the row cover on helps things grow no matter what. They trap heat radiating off the ground and keep everything warmer through the night. I find that night time temps are more indicative of growth than day time temps this time of year. Even if it's warm and sunny during the day, growth slows considerably if it dips below 40 at night. Row cover helps buffer those temperatures, and for beds that don't need to be harvested yet, the row covers will stay on even during this weeks warmth. Stuff we're harvesting tomorrow like beets and cauliflower will be uncovered and left uncovered until the weekend because of how warm it will be. Three straight nights in the 40's and one even in the 50's, we'll see a lot of late season growth this week!
