We could use some rain. We're doing what's known as "dry farming" on our property, which really just means that we don't have irrigation setup in our fields. I am so incredibly grateful for the soil that we have that allows us to farm without irrigation. It is rich in organic material which helps shed water when it gets over saturated, but also retains water during dry stretches. I have never seen a plant die because of drought stretches, which is impressive considering we have had some long periods of time without rain over the years. I think it was in 2019 that we went over 5 weeks without a drop. Nothing dies, but without some rain, it doesn't grow much, either.

We're not quite there yet, but its getting close. The last rainfall we had on the farm was through the night on August 24th, and aside from a slight chance later this week, there isn't much to reassure us in the 10 day forecast (I'm really hoping that 40% chance on Thursday materializes!) We are pretty much relying on heavy dews in the morning for water on the crops until we get a rain. I went out the other day with our water wheel transplanter and dropped water on some beds that could use a little water as they get established, but it's too inefficient to do it across the farm. Getting irrigation on the farm is in the long term plans, but for now I'm just thankful we have such great soil!
